The United States Postal Service held its annual Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive on May 10, and mail carriers from the local post office collected 1,750 pounds of donated food . The food will be distributed back into the community through food banks.
Postmaster at the Ely Post Office Natalie Martinez said that the amount of food donated this year was an increase from years prior.
Mail carrier Alice Carson said that it feels good to be able to help out, even while she is doing her job.
“It’s a great feeling. It’s really cool that we get to help the community give back while we deliver the mail,” Carson said.
