The long-awaited White Pine Aquatic Center will open its doors for an open house on June 28 at 3 p.m. and officially begin letting people swim in the pool starting June 30. The $7 million indoor swimming facility will feature a full-size olympic pool with added climbing walls on the end as well as a smaller kid-friendly pool complete with umbrella-shaped water fountain.
Director of the Aquatic Center Megan Brown said she was “very excited” to finally let the community come in to see the final product.
“I don’t think we have anything that compares in Ely,” Brown said. “It’s a really nice facility. The building is beautiful and both pools are very spacious.”
Though the pools will be open for swimmers of all ages, Brown said there are plans to use the facility for a variety of programs, including starting a swim team.
“We have a lot of programs that we are going to be offering to the public,” Brown said. “In addition to starting a team, we also will have themed nights every third Friday of the month. Our first one will be in July and feature a pirate theme.”
Swimming lessons and “aquacize” water aerobic class will be offered Monday through Saturday. The pools will also be available for rental outside of its business hours.
According to Core Construction’s Project Manager Brandon Whipple, everything with the construction of the facility finished on their timetable and within the county’s budget.
“Everything went great thanks to the commissioners. I think [the Aquatic Center] turned out great. It will be a great facility for the community,” Whipple said.
The Aquatic Center will house 30 employees, including 24 lifeguards, five cashiers and Brown’s director position.
As part of the Aquatic Center’s grand opening, residents will be able to swim for free on June 30 at both the new facility and the McGill pool. After that, swimmers can choose between paying for a day, month, year, or buy a punch pass good for either 10 or 20 visits. The prices range from a one day admission of $3.50 for an adult to $225 for an adult annual pass. Discounts will also be offered for families and groups.
