Sandi Greathouse, the general manager for Sahara Motors, was no stranger to Ely when she decided to move back to town from Delta in February. She had spent several days a week in town from 2007 to 2010, checking in on the dealership before returning back home.

But after running the dealership remotely from Delta for years, she decided she wanted to be more involved with the day-to-day operations than just looking at names on pieces of paper.

“It just works better when you are at the actual place,” Greathouse said. “We decided that it would be easier and more effective if I moved out here.”

Greathouse’s parents purchased the dealership back in 2003, when it still had local competition from Ely Ford. Now, as the only game in town, Greathouse knows not to rest on her laurels, thanks in large part to competition out of town.

“We have people that will compare us to the bigger dealerships is Vegas, Salt Lake and Elko. The one thing that people have noticed is that what we say we are doing, we actually do,” The general manager said.

Greathouse added that buying a new car from Sahara Motors can be done in under an hour in most cases, while larger dealerships will often make customers wait hours and make them deal with multiple people.  That’s not a philosophy she believes in. Instead, she trusts her salesman Chuck Hutton.

“Chuck is a great salesman. He’s great at getting people financed. When he started here, that is when we saw the biggest increase in customer service because he really focuses on that,” Greathouse said.

As for the local dealership’s inventory, Greathouse said her lot usually holds anywhere between 70 to 90 vehicles, including a full line of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles as well as Kawasaki motorcycles and vehicles. She said the new Ram trucks are currently her bestsellers.

“This is truck country out here,” she said. “The big thing going on right now is that the 2015 models are about to come out so there is good rebates on all the current 2014 models.”

As for her move back to Ely, Greathouse said that the locals have made it an easy transition from one small town to another.

“My favorite part of my job is dealing with the people that come in. It wasn’t too much different moving from Delta to Ely, but the people out here are so nice that it makes a big difference,” she said.

Keeping those nice people happy is Greathosue’s number one priority. Unlike most bigger towns, with multiple dealerships to choose from, Greathouse knows her market. She also knows that going over the top to make someone happy can mean longtime business and loyalty.

“Most of our business is repeat business so we need to build that reputation up and take care of our customers so that we can have that repeat business,” she said.
