John Wade Burdick and Amelia Jane Herder have been named Students of the Month for December, according to Ely Elks Lodge. Burdick, age 18, is the son of Martin Burdick and Wendy Lopez of Ely. Herder, age 18, is the daughter of Michael and Ann Herder of Ely. Both are Seniors at White Pine High School and will graduate with the Class of 2015. Burdick is a member of 4-H and his hobbies are hunting, fishing, trapping, archery and riding motorcycles. Herder is a member of the National Honor Society and has been Vice-President and is currently President. She is active in softball and is the President of her Church Laurel Class. Herder is a member of the Certified Nursing Assistant class and the medical assistant class at WPHS. Herder is also a member of the WPHS Choir, soccer team manager and a church youth camp leader. She is a water safety instructor and is certified in first-aid, CPR and as a lifeguard. She is a member of the culinary class and has taken all honors and AP English courses offered by WPHS. Herder is also Secretary for her Church Mia Maid class and has participated in early morning seminary. She has been a church youth camp leader for three years and is a member of the Prom committee at WPHS. She has earned about 36 college credits through dual credit courses and volunteers at the children’s arts festival, after receiving the Honor Bee service award at her church. Her hobbies are writing, making baby blankets and puppets, cooking, reading, church activities and service projects, creating movies, working with youth, listening to and making music, swimming and spending time with family and friends.
