The White Pine High School wrestling team will begin their quest to reclaim the division championship on Friday when they compete in their only home meet of the season at the WPHS gymnasium. Coach Mike Gamberg said that he expects his seniors to pick up right where they lift off from last season to claim some titles in the 11 team meet.

“I would expect the seniors to do very well,” Gamberg said. “We have 11 people on this year’s team, four of them new. I think the guys that have wrestled before will do fine, they just have to knock the cobwebs off.”

Assistant coach Skylar Hall added to Gamberg’s comments saying that he will be looking for the new wrestlers to win a match or two after a couple weeks of good, “intense” practices.

“I want to see how the new guys compete in a meet setting. they will get a lot of wrestling experience in that first day at the meet, which will be really helpful for them,” Hall said.

But while the newest additions to the team prepare for their first real competitive experience, returning wrestler Monty Moore said he has been waiting to get back out onto the mats.

“I’m really excited for this weekend,” he said. “This is the only time we get to wrestle in front of a home crowd so I want to start the season off with a bang and just get better from there.”

The home wrestling meet will begin on Friday at noon, with the winners continuing on to Saturday again at 10 a.m.
