Newly elected Gary Perea was appointed as the Chairman of the White Pine County Commission on Monday in the board’s first official meeting of 2015 held inside the County Library. Laurie Carson was appointed Vice-Chairman.
Perea, who served as a county commissioner for eight years in White Pine County said that he wasn’t expecting to be nominated for the position but that his prior experience on the commission will help him keep meetings on task.
“The chairman’s primary position is to set the agenda and to run the meetings, it is not to try and stop discussion. It is a facilitator role and I feel good about being able to do that,” he said.
Perea spent eight years on the White Pine County Commission, three of which as the Vice-Chairman.
Though several people in attendance at the meeting urged the commission to nominate Mike Coster for chairman, it was ultimately Coster who nominated Perea.
“It was a very, very close call for me but I thought Gary brought independence since he has been gone for a couple of years which will help give our staff a fresh start,” Coster said.
