Senior White Pine wrestler Drue Ashby challenged himself at the beginning of his final year to win more and to place in more tournaments than any year prior. So far, he is accomplishing that, and impressing his head coach Mike Gamberg along the way.
Ashby was one of only three White Pine wrestlers to travel to a 35-team tournament in Buell, Utah over the weekend. Ashby placed third in the tournament. Both senior Christopher Gamberg and sophomore Monty Moore wrestled well, coach Gamberg said, but neither advanced to the podium.
The rest of the White Pine team travelled to a smaller junior varsity tournament in Pahranagat Valley, though no Bobcat wrestlers placed. Gamberg said more teams participated in the Pahranagat Valley tournament than he anticipated, including some tough schools from Boulder City and Las Vegas that led to the lack of any White Pine wrestlers placing.
The Bobcats wrestlers will all travel together to compete in another 30-plus team tournament in Spring Creek over the weekend.
