Senior White Pine HIgh School wrestler Drue Ashby continued to rack up medals this season with a second place finish at a 31-team wrestling tournament in Spring Creek over the weekend.

“Drue wrestled really well. I’ve said it time and time again, but he continues to be our most valuable wrestler,” coach Mike Gamberg said of Ashby in a practice on Tuesday.

Ashby, White Pine’s only medalist in the tournament, lost in the finals to “one of the best wrestlers in the state” Sheldon Davis, according to Gamberg.

White Pine finished in 16th place in the Kiwanis Invitational in Spring Creek. Gamberg said that “minor” mistakes” held back the teams other two leading wrestlers this season, sophomore Monty Moore and senior Christopher Gamberg,

“They continue to be steady and they are coming down to the final part of the season where they will begin to shine,” the coach said.

The other three wrestlers that traveled to the tournament also won several matches a piece, with Jay Mabson and Joe Pauley both finishing with a 3-2 record and Joey Lyons finishing 2-2.

The team will wrestle in one more tournament in Wells on Jan. 25 before beginning division duels.
