The Ely City Council unanimously approved the purchase of the O’Flaherty Building on Campton Street in a special meeting held on Jan. 29. The former Unemployment Office, located at 480 Campton Street, will be the site of the new City Hall once building inspections are completed. The council opted to move into the building rather than remodel the current City Hall.

“City Hall hasn’t really been maintained since the 1970’s. When you bring dignitaries from the state to meet, it is not a pleasing environment,” City of Ely Mayor Melody Van Camp said, adding that other issues such as the expense to heat the building factored into their decision.

City Clerk Bob Sweitzer said that no date is set for the move as the city awaits several building inspections, but that he anticipates the new City Hall will be open in March.
