Bobcat baseball coach Quinn Ewell knew what he was getting into when he signed on to be the new head coach of the White Pine High School baseball program last year. As a first year coach trying to implement a new system with a young, inexperienced team went about the way it would for anyone in that kind of situation, finishing 2-12 in league play.
But Ewell sees his second season not as a second chance, but as an extension of the progress he and his team made from last year.
“We began to really play competitively right at the end of last season but we just ran out of time,” Ewell said after finishing throwing pitches in a batting cage during a Tuesday afternoon practice.
“We have seven returners from last season. We are going to lean on them to lead our younger guys through some of the same stuff they experienced for their first time last year.”
So far he has liked what has seen, with the team finishing their first preseason tournament of the year with three wins and a tie.
The White Pine Bobcats will play in their first home games of the season in a double header against Agassi Prep on March 20 with games starting at 1 and 3 p.m.
