The White Pine High School Boy’s Golf team claimed their first team win of the season in Wendover on March 18, led by an even-par performance from senior Chris Young. The Bobcat team beat out rival Battle Mountain by just two strokes to claim first place out of the six teams that competed in the meet.
“Battle Mountain is still going to be the team from up north to beat, but it was nice to make a statement this early,” golf coach Randy Long said.
Young was the expected leader of the team going into this season having won an individual state title last year. The senior’s even par 72 bought the team some breathing room, beating out the second best score of the meet by 13 strokes. But for as good as Young’s day on the course was, it was the overall improvement of the younger golfers on the team that brought down their total score enough to secure the win.
“I was really impressed by the strides some of these kids have made already and I expect them to only get better as the season goes on,” Long said, adding that he feels the team has more room for improvement than other state contenders such as Battle Mountain.
The boy’s golf team will next head to Jackpot Junior High School on March 26 for a 9 a.m. tee time.
