It’s not often in the world of sports to get a do-over, but the White Pine High School track and field team will get something close this weekend when they return to Elko for the second time in two weeks.
According to Assistant Coach Darin Stewart, both of his White Pine squads will be hungry for a win after competing with a Spring Break depleted roster against bigger schools at the Elko Invitational last Saturday. The boys and girls teams will have a chance to show how they stack up against several Division III schools in Elko again on Friday as part of the Ward Coates Invitational.
“We had some of the boys set personal records but they still weren’t enough to beat some of the bigger schools’ athletes. That shows me that they are still making progress but I know these kids would rather go out there and win and I think they have a better shot this weekend,” Stewart said.
Both teams were hurt from having several players on Spring Break vacation and unable to attend the meet, but that didn’t stop a few individual athletes from shining. Mikinley Prengel continued to impress coaches as she placed first in the 400 meter race and second in both the long jump and triple jump. Lucy Fullmer also made it onto the podium with a second place finish in the high jump and the girls 4×400 meter relay team placed third overall.
