I would like to nominate Rose Mehlaff of White Pine High School as the Lions’ Club Teacher of the Month. Mehlhaff teaches American Literature, English 10 Honors and Art. She has been teaching at the school for five years.
Mehlhaff is known by students to be caring and nurturing. She makes an effort each day to personally interact with each student and stands and greets them as they enter the classroom, usually insisting that they shake her hand before entering. Mehlhaff treats students courteously and works to provide them with options so that they learn how to make choices that support their learning.
Mehlaff is devoted to becoming the most effective teacher she can be. In fact, if there was one word I would use to describe her and her professional persona it would be reflective. Mehlhaff constantly evaluates her effectiveness — from lessons taught to assessments given to interactions with students, she always thinks about her effectiveness and how to improve it. She actively seeks feedback from mentors and colleagues all of her own accord. She recently decided to engage in the rigorous National Board Certification process and now receives feedback on lesson design and implementation from other professionals; all in pursuit of the dream of being a master teacher.
Besides being a leader inside the classroom, Mehlhaff helps leads the staff on the whole as well. She serves on the school’s Leadership Team and sometimes conducts professional development for her colleagues. She is a member of the English Team, working to improve the results of students school-wide in the realm of English. Mehlhaff uses technology as an instructional tool regularly, something that was foreign to her a mere too years ago.
Mehlhaff is committed to the students of our district and it gives me great pleasure to nominate her for this honor.
