The White Pine High School softball team secured their entry into this year’s state championship tournament with road wins over Mountain View Christian Academy 12-2 and Needles 11-8.
The Ladycats, who entered into the divisional tournament as the top seed could not overcome the bats of Lincoln County in their two games at the tournament, dropping their first game on Friday against the Lynx 13-1 and their second game on Saturday 9-2.
Head Coach Krystal Smith had said leading into the tournament that she expected Lincoln County to provided the stiffest competition of the teams and that the state title game could end up being a rematch of the two top seeded teams.
White Pine will begin their state tournament against Yerington at the Meadows High School in Las Vegas at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Smith has said that her veteran team is hungry to win a state title in softball after letting one slip through their hands to Needles last year by one run. If the Ladycats were to win the state championship, that would mark the second straight state title for coach Smith in consecutive sporting seasons, the previous being with the girls basketball team.
