Kids will forever love trains. It’s a fact that Nevada Northern Railway embraces wholeheartedly as it lets kids under 12 ride free all summer long on Monday through Thursday excursion trains.

This summer, the railway’s prized Locomotive 40 turns 105 years old. Built in 1910, this treasured steam engine is Nevada’s official state steam locomotive and is treated like royalty by engineers and railroad staff. This steam locomotive has spent its entire existence with the Nevada Northern Railway, ever since it was purchased for only $13,000 more than a century ago.

While Locomotive 40 will be honored with a small ceremony July 25, it’s the free rides for kids through the end of September that has families celebrating. The free rides for kids are available only Mondays through Thursdays on all regular excursions.

Additional summer highlights at the historic railway museum include Railroad Realty Week from June 12-19; the Rockin’ and Rollin’ Geology Train on June 13 and July 11; Star Train on June 19 and July 17; Father’s Day (where dad’s ride free) on June 21; Train Robbery on Jun 21 and July 26; and the Fireworks Express on July 4.
