RENO – Do you savor the flavor of rustic foods cooked the cowboy way – in traditional Dutch ovens? Are you a top dog in cast iron cuisine? Then the Nevada State Dutch Oven Championship is the place for you!

On Sept. 12, the Reno-based Northern Sierra Dutch Oven Group (NSDOG) is hosting its 4th Annual Nevada State Dutch Oven Championship at Sportsman’s Warehouse, 3306 Kietzke Lane, in Reno. The competition will be a three-pot format with breads, main dishes and desserts prepared and judged on site. Set-up for the competition begins at 7 a.m., with a cooks meeting at 7:30 a.m. Main dishes must be completed by noon; breads and desserts by 1 p.m.

Adult competitors (ages 18+) may compete individually or as teams. Cash prizes will be awarded for first ($1,000), second ($500) and third ($250) places. There are no entry fees, but competitors must provide their own ingredients, charcoal, equipment and shade (canopies, EZ-ups, etc.). Out-of-state residents are welcome to participate. The competition is a sanctioned cook-off by the International Dutch Oven Society (IDOS) and winners may be invited to IDOS’ world championship in March 2016.

Founded in 2009, the Northern Sierra Dutch Oven Group (NSDOG) is a volunteer group of Dutch oven enthusiasts of all levels (beginners to “seasoned”) with the goal of learning and enjoying the traditional style of Dutch oven cooking. Members participate in group and community activities, share recipes and tips, and generally promote a passion for Dutch oven cooking. NSDOG has been featured at the Genoa Cowboy Festival, Carson City Rendezvous, in Edible Reno-Tahoe magazine, and teams with local historical museums and state parks to present demonstrations and teach classes.
