White Pine High School will play host to six high school girls soccer teams and five boys team this Friday and Saturday as part of the school’s third annual home tournament. The Bobcat soccer team is scheduled to begin their tournament with a match against Las Vegas private School The Meadows at 10 a.m. on Sept. 4 at the high school field. The Ladycats will begin with a rematch from last year’s state tournament against Elko.
Ladycats head soccer coach Tyler Laity said that the chance to play against Elko again after having been defeated by them in the last game of their season last year has been highly anticipated by some of his returning starters. The coach took most of the blame for the loss, saying that the team wasn’t prepared for penalty kicks, which ultimately decided the match.
“Needless to say we are coming back this year prepared. We’ve practiced penalty kicks, which has been fun. But we are excited to have the opportunity to go out their and have a chance to prove ourselves against Elko,” Laity said.
Though the early game Friday might prove difficult to attend for those with a nine to five job, the coach encouraged parents and members of the community to come out and support the team in their second Friday game, a 7 p.m. matchup against Pershing.
“We want as many people as possible to come out and show their support for our team,” Laity continued.
The coach hopes that a summer trip with members of his varsity team to watch collegiate level play at Dixie State will have helped show his athletes the kind of athleticism it takes to compete at the highest level in high school and beyond.
