Last weekend, Dec. 4-5, 11 members of the Ely Youth Swim Team competed in the 7th Annual DART IMX challenge in St. George, Utah.

Coached by six-time Junior Olympian swimmer Ali Swope, the team started practicing in June with eight swimmers. 22 swimmers now regularly train as a team. Swope helped to start the team through Northern Nevada Aquatics once construction on the White Pine County Aquatics Center had been completed. She brings six years of coaching experience to her first year in Ely.

With no high school team, the youth group remains the city’s de facto swim team.

“We’re trying to get them trained to swim at a competitive level,” Swope said.

Highlights from the meet include Charity Perry’s victory in her first heat of the 200 yard freestyle.

The Dixie Aquatic Race Team hosts the annual I.M. Xtreme Challenge under official sanction from USA Swimming. Swope is currently working on hosting a swim meet with the Elko team in the future.
