On Monday, Dec. 10 the Ely City Council voted unanimously to approve an interim inter-local agreement to share fire and emergency medical services with unincorporated areas surrounding the city. Councilman Sam Hanson was absent.
The agreement provides Ely Volunteer Fire Department coverage from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2016 at a cost to the county of $6,000 per month.
The council’s approval sets forth a cooperative framework while the city and county Fire Chiefs work toward a permanent solution, which may include consolidation of the city department into the county fire service. From this point forward, both the city council and White Pine County Board of Commissioners will assemble special teams to negotiate terms for the future agreement.
