Stephen Mitchell Borchert passed away at the age of 67 in Sacramento on February 28. Stephen was born in Reno to Irvin Borchert, a pioneer White Pine county aviator and manager of Yelland Field, and his wife Jessie, who met Irv while teaching at Ely Grade School. Stephen’s paternal grandparents, Harry Borchert, and Josephine Burke were pioneer settlors in the Spring Valley where they raised Irv and his siblings Kay and Dorothy, lifetime residents of Ely, on the Jackrabbit Ranch. Stephen’s cousin Casey Fisher served as senator from White Pine County in the Nevada legislature
Steve visited White Pine County often where he swam in the McGill pool, picnicked at Cave Lake, and toured Ft. Schellbourne and Cherry Creek in pursuit of his life long interest in Western history. Steve graduated from C.K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento and San Jose State.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Triona and is survived by his daughter Sinead and his brothers Mark and Steve and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
Services were held on March 12 at 11 am in the Scottish Rite Masonic Center (6151 H Street, Sacramento). A true honorary son of White Pine County and proud native Nevadan Stephen will be missed by many.
