After months of planning and preparation Ely State Prison is recycling!  The first load of cardboard and paper arrived at J & M  Recycling Center last Friday and this was only a portion of what is expected to be recycled.  Three bales of cardboard was produced with each bale  weighing 900 pounds.  Warden Baker has been working with The Cities’ Recycling Committee to reduce the amount of garbage that is disposed into the landfill.

It is so important to recycle and not only will it help extend the life of our Landfill, but it’s good for our environment.  Cardboard makes up a significant percentage of landfill waste. Nearly 80% of all retailers and grocers recycle their cardboard.  Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees and approximately 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away each year in the US.  April 22 is Earth Day and all of us can celebrate the wonderful Planet that we live in by doing our part – REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!
