Gavin Rhett Henriod and Jessie Kay Leyba have been named Junior Students of the Year for 2015-2016, according to Ely Elks Lodge #1469. Henriod, 14, is the son of Scott and Tawnya Henriod of Ely. Leyba, 14, is the daughter of Susie and Sam Leyba of Ely. Both Henriod and Leyba will be graduating with the Class of 2016 at White Pine Middle School. The Junior Student of the Year program is sponsored by the Elks Lodge in an effort to bring recognition to the two outstanding students selected from the Junior Students of the Month for 2015-2016. Junior Students of the Year are selected by the Youth Activities Committee in the sponsoring lodge and are suitably honored at promotion ceremonies. Multiple achievement, citizenship, scholarship and leadership are the basis for selection of Junior Students of the Year.
Henriod has been active in WPMS basketball, track, band, soccer and leadership class. He is the Deacons Quorum President, 1st Counselor and Secretary in addition to being a member of the Teachers Quorum. Henriod is also a NDOW volunteer. His hobbies are running, exercising, reading, hunting and camping.
Leyba is the Secretary of WPMS Student Council and the WPMS Junior High representative of the White Pine Rodeo Club. She is a two time national qualifier for the Nevada State rodeo shooting competition and placed 10th at the national shooting competition. She has been a 4-H member for 9 years and a volleyball A team member both years of Middle School. Leyba is also a member of the Lutheran Church, an Elks Hoop Shoot winner and a 4-H Ambassador. Her hobbies are volleyball, softball, hunting, shooting, sports, band, riding horses, fishing, leadership,photography, 4-H, dog training, music and camping.
