The following local residents have received their degree from WGU Nevada. The university held its inaugural commencement ceremony at the Hilton Lake Las Vegas Resort on May 21 and celebrated the graduation of more than 200 graduates, representing 11 Nevada counties.

Amy Ulibarri of Ely (89301) has received her Bachelor of Science in Accounting.

Cathryn Byers of Ely (89301) has received her Master of Arts in Mathematics Education (5-12).

At its May 21 commencement, the state-based university honored 218 graduates who have completed their bachelor’s or master’s degrees in one of four disciplines: business, K–12 teacher education, information technology, and health professions, including nursing.

Nevada’s Lieutenant Governor, Mark Hutchison, delivered the commencement address to the 75 graduates who attended in person and the more than 500 family members and friends who traveled from throughout the state to attend the ceremony.

WGU Nevada is the state-endorsed affiliate of nationally-recognized Western Governors University (WGU). Designed to meet the needs of busy working adults, WGU Nevada’s competency-based model makes it possible for students to set their own study schedules and move quickly through material they already know so they can focus on what they still need to learn.

While WGU’s online degree programs are rigorous and challenging, adult learners are still able to earn their degrees without sacrificing work, family, and financial obligations. As a result, many students are able to accelerate their studies, finishing faster and saving money.

These new graduates are the first to earn degrees at WGU Nevada. Sixty-three percent of the graduates are classified as underserved and 40 percent represent the first generation in their family to complete a college degree. In addition to celebrating its graduates, WGU Nevada celebrated an exciting milestone of surpassing 1,700 currently enrolled students, an increase of 93 percent over Western Governor’s University’s enrollment in Nevada in June 2015 — when the state and WGU formed a partnership to create WGU Nevada.
