Some Nevada residents may be eligible for a refund through the Senior Tax Assistance Rebate Program. This statewide program refunds a portion of the property tax paid by eligible senior citizens on their primary residence.
The filing period to participate in the program ends Sept. 30, 2016. To qualify: You must be at least 65 years old as of June 30, 2015. Your spouse can be any age. Household income cannot exceed 200 percent of the federal poverty level, $23,540 for singles and $31,860 for couples, income adjusted based on the number of individuals living in the household.
You must have owned and lived in your primary residence for at least one year at the time of application. You must own only one property. Your liquid assets and those of your spouse cannot exceed $150,000. Should an applicant’s residence have an assessed value of $500,000 or more, a credit report will be pulled to verify no mortgages exist on other properties. Refunds will be up to a maximum of $500 and will be mailed by the end of 2016.
