White Pine High’s volleyball team saw its seven-game win streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to Yerington last week, but came right back with a 3-0 win over Silver Stage the next day.

Coach Kenna Almberg said the match with Yerington, which went five sets, “was our best match of the season.” Scores were 16-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 13-15. “It was exciting every point. Yerington (the three-time defending state champion), is the only losses we’ve had all season.”

The Lions have won all nine matches between the team since 2012, and the 3-2 loss last week was the closest of the nine.

“We lost the first two sets because we struggled with the service-receive and they scored a lot of points. We came back in the third and fourth set and I couldn’t have been more pleased with our serve-receive. It was solid, almost flawless.”  In the final set, Almberg said, “We were tied at 13 before they got the last two points. The crowd was large and loud. It was a very exciting, high intensity match.”

The next day, against Silver Stage, the Ladycats won easily 25-12, 25-17, 25-7.

Almberg said Mckinley Pringle moved to the outside for that game and recorded 29 digs and 8 kills. “And Nina Lopez had 12 kills that match to lead the team. Our libero, Hailey Ernest, did a phenomenal job with 33 great passes and 29 digs, and Kendra Thompson, our setter, had real solid play with 30 assists and 17 digs.”

ShuRee Finicum was another player who gained high praise.

This week, the Ladycats have three home matches in three days, which began with 1A Eureka yesterday (mostly JV players), then North Tahoe (0-6, 1-11) and Incline today and tomorrow.

Incline (5-5, 5-4)) is two matches behind of White Pine in the current standings, but White Pine (12-2-1, 2-2) has played less league matches to date. The Bobcat girls beat both team on their western road trip in mid-September.

Except for the Eureka match yesterday, the remaining schedule for the Ladycats will be at home, ending with Pahranagat Valley and West Wendover Oct. 24-25. The one-day 2A Northern League playoffs will be in Fernley Nov. 5.
