White Pine High has earned a berth in the 2A Northern football playoffs in a couple of weeks. They did with a 46-0 shutout of West Wendover last week. It was the fourth straight win for the Bobcats over the Wolverines since 2009.
“But getting that spot in the playoffs was the biggest prize” said coach Quinn Ewell, “second time in a row.” The game at Battle Mountain this Friday will decide the third and fourth seeds in the playoffs.
With Wendover, “We got the offense going right away and were up 17-0 within probably the first five minutes of the game,” Ewell said. The scoring drives were punctuated by long runs to the outside. “Then our kicker, Saxton Brewster, hit a 37-yard field goal on the second series after he had scored our first touchdown.” A third score came on a 60-yard pass from Monty Moore to Dakota Barela. The Bobcats added more in the second quarter and held a 36-0 halftime lead.
Ewell said having Toby Sturgeon return to the offensive and defensive line from an injury was a big plus for the team. “He is very aggressive, able to blow up the line, get into the backfield and disrupt the ball carrier or quarterback.”
Wendover (3-5, 2-3) did not have starting quarterback Zade Elton who did not play due to a shoulder injury.
Barela had a very good all-around game Ewell said. “One of those games I wish we had played the last one (with Lincoln County). We were actually executing, and the passes were right there and driving the ball downfield. Once they get clicking on all cylinders they are fun bunch to watch.”
Pershing County (8-0, 5-0) is the league leader and No. 1 seed, with Yerington (7-1, 5-1), the three-time defending state champion, the No. 2 seed.
The playoffs begin Nov. 4-5, with the finals in Las Vegas Nov. 19. Lincoln County (7-0, 5-0) leads the 2A Southern League over Needles (7-1, 4-1). The Lynx scored three times in the fourth quarter, including the final 22 seconds to beat Needles last week 33-32.
