The White Pine High boys soccer team successfully continued its drive towards the playoffs with a convincing 4-0 over Fernley on Saturday coupled with a 2-2 draw Friday against league-leader Dayton. The Cats now have 3 wins and 2 draws in the last five games as they head to Yerington today to determine the third playoff spot.
Friday’s match started off with a bang as a Fernley forward kicked the Cats keeper Seth Robertson in the face resulting in just a yellow card for Fernley and an anxious Bobcat bench. Assistant Coach Ryan Costello on the situation, “We just had to sit Seth for the game, since it was a vicious hit and we had to watch for a possible concussion.”
The Cats player Diogo Gandra immediately responded with a break-away goal off a great assist from Henrik Skjolden to give the Cats the lead. Dayton responded with a goal past emergency keeper Jonatan Gonzales to tie the game. Jayden Brewer set up Diogo early in the second half to make it a 2-1 game. Unfortunately for Cats, the Dust Devils scored once more to make it a 2-2 final.
Saturday’s match was a win-or-you’re-out game with Fernley in regards to playoff hopes. The Cats jumped out early as Jonatan made a nice pass to Diogo for the early lead. Another Jayden-to-Diogo goal followed that making it 2-0 for the Bobcats at the half. Senior defender Colton Rowley got on the board late in the game by burying a penalty kick after Richi Giminez had been taken out in the box. Richi finished off the scoring with moments left for the 4-nil victory.
This Friday’s game is essentially a playoff game as well, since the winner advances to next week’s playoffs in Winnemucca.
