A tough match between two good teams went into the second half before the outcome was decided.

Yerington and White Pine were battling for the third and final 3A playoff spot last Friday in Yerington. It was scoreless after the first half, so coach Leif Tokerud and the Cats were a place to pull out the win. Both teams scored in the second half, but Yerington got three goals and White Pine only two.

The Lions offense was stymied by the Cats most of the game. They had scored 24 goals over their last several league matches, but the Bobcats limited them to only three.

It was a bitter-sweet loss for White Pine as they had beaten Yerington 2-0 in their first meeting in Ely on Sept. 30. The Bobcats finished the season 6-6-4, 4-4-2. It is their best mark since going 7-6-3 in 2013, and a vast improvement over the 5-12 mark in 2015 and 1-10 in 2014.

As explained in the NIAA official handbook, after the changing of classifications from Division III and Division 1-A, there is now just 3A for boys soccer. The Northern Division is composed of League A and League B. White Pine, Dayton, West Wendover, Battle Mountain, etc. are included in League B.

The top two (2) teams (champion & runner-up) out of this Northern Region Championship tournament and the top two finalists out of the Southern Region championship tournament advance to the 2016 NIAA Class 3A Nevada State High School Boys Soccer Championship tournament Nov. 11 & 12 at Bettye Wilson Park in Las Vegas, presented by the Station Casinos.

The first round playoff pairings for the northern region tournament in Winnemucca Nov. 3 matched Sparks (20-2-1) and Incline, the defending state champion (13-5-4), Dayton (9-5-2) and Truckee (14-4-3), West Wendover (10-6-2) and North Tahoe (10-4-6), and Yerington (5-5-1) vs. Elko (15-7-4).
