Olivia Maestes and Colton Britton received the Elks Students of the Year award.

Colton James Britton and Olivia Frances Maestes  have been named Students of the Year for 2016-2017, according to Ely Elks Lodge #1469.

Britton, age 18, is the son of Beckie and Andy Britton of Ely.

Maestes, age 17, is the daughter of Peter and Danette Maestes of Ely.  Both Britton and Maestes will graduate with the Class of 2017 at White Pine High School.

The Student of the Year program is sponsored by the Ely Elks Lodge in an effort to bring recognition to two outstanding students selected from the Students of the Month for 2016-2017.

Students of the Year are selected by the Youth Activities committee in the sponsoring lodge and are suitably honored at a school awards night.  Multiple achievement, citizenship, scholarship and leadership are the basis for selection of Students of the Year.

Britton has been active in Little League baseball, Junior Jazz basketball, coaching Little League and Junior Jazz and serves as an umpire.

Britton also serves as a concession clerk at the baseball games.  He is a four year starter in varsity baseball, captain of the baseball team for two years, Junior Varsity basketball starter, Fears, Tears and beers bicycle enduro racer, WPMS basketball field attendant for the Little League All Star tournament.

He was first team, all-conference for WPHS baseball his Junior year and was second team all-state the same year. During his Freshman and Sophomore years he was honorable mention and second team all-conference. He was also a journalism article writer his Freshman year and participated in co-ed softball, Mens Eureka  softball tournament, Junior Day baseball showcase and the RYLA.

His hobbies are baseball, basketball, fishing, downhill mountain biking, kayaking, bass fishing, camping, back packing, hiking, fly fishing and shooting.

Maestes is a member of 4-H and is currently a 4-H Ambassador.  She is active in Student Council leadership and a member of the WPHS Bobkettes dance team.  She also participates in peer leadership, a church leadership role and cheerleading.

Her hobbies are playing the piano, making crafts, cross stitching and cake decorating.
