The White Pine High soccer team is having a phenomenal season under first-year head coach Juan Carlos Cervantes. At 17-0, the girls team also leads the 2A Northern Division 10-0. Meanwhile, the boys team under coach Ryan Costello is playing .500 ball, (5-5, 4-4) and are in in fourth place in the 2A Northern.
Cervantes, an experienced coach, but in his first year at White Pine with the girls team, said senior Lily Fullmer leads the team with 42 goals scored. Junior goalkeeper Mikell Weston has 23 saves.
The Ladycats have scored 100 goals and only allowed 14 during the season. Shawn Peterson has 17 goals and 18 assists.“We have aimed for the best, and the girls have responded with a full commitment and been sticking to it,” Cervantes said.
“We’ve had several players step up and really shine. Shawn Peterson is very effective, Brenna Williams is a real leader in the back along with freshman Eva Kingston. I moved Hanna Barber from goalkeeper to the infielder as a winger and she is powerful. She can run and her rate of improvement is exceptional.”
He said the challenge will be in the playoffs when the team faces 3A schools since the NIAA combines 2A/3A into one classification.
Last year, White Pine was in the 2A/3A Northern playoffs and lost 2-1 in overtime to Spring Creek in the first round. This year, defending girls state champion Truckee leads the Northern Division and Pahrump Valley leads the Southern Division.
“I’m confident of our chances in the playoffs,” Cervantes said, “We have been dominating opponents.” They have scored eight goals in three games and nine in a 9-1 win at Yerington Sept. 23.
The boys and girls team have the same schedule with all their remaining games in the regular season are at home beginning this weekend hosting Dayton and Fernley and finishing up Oct. 27 and 28 with Whittell and Yerington.
