There’s a saying in Ely when you get ready to retire you put a snow shovel over your shoulder, head south and when someone asks you what’s that on your shoulder you know that’s a good place to call home.

Well for those of us that call Ely home and maybe even look forward to the snow I would like to share a few reminders especially for business owners about snow removal.

Under City Code 8-1-5 Snow, Sleet Removal the ordinate states that the owner, tenant, lessee, occupant, or any other agent of said property, house or other building abutting on any paved or unpaved sidewalk, path or other walkway available to pedestrians must remove the snow and sleet from the sidewalk.

The ordinance states that this must be done within one hour after the snow or sleet has stopped falling. If it snows between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. then the snow and sleet must be removed by 9:00 a.m. the following day.

Just a reminder that the snow cannot be pushed into the roadway. The snow should be placed in the gutter just off the sidewalk area. This will allow snow plows to access the snow for removal.  Well take a few minutes out of your day, make sure you know where that trusted snow shovel is and that it’s in good working condition. Now we well wait and see what kind of winter were going to have.
