A fight broke out last Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at the Ely State maximum security prison.

A state official says the fight left four inmates injured, including two who were taken to hospitals in Las Vegas, 250 miles away. One inmate underwent surgery and all four were returned to the prison by Friday, November 3, 2017. Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Keast didn’t immediately say what sparked the melee involving men using handmade weapons. Approximately 40 inmates were involved in a fight that was between particular groups of inmates.  Correctional officers contained the fighting by utilizing pepper spray to break up the brawl.

The facility was in lockdown as result of the fight.  Keast described the injuries as stab wounds that were not life-threatening.

No staff members were targeted or injured during the incident. It was stressed that this was not a riot. A riot implies that inmates took over the prison, and that clearly was not the case in this situation.

Ely State Prison has about 1,100 inmates, and houses the state’s death row and execution chamber.
