Special to The Ely Times
The Annual Turkey Vultures Stretch 5k returns to Ely this weekend. This is the fourth year for this event that revolves around the arrival of the turkey vultures back to Ely in March.
Some of the turkey vultures winter as far as Central and South America and return to Ely in the spring and can be commonly seen in the Ely Cemetery. The route takes you past the cemetery where the vultures can be seen perched in the trees. Seeing the vultures fly around the surrounding area of the cemetery is quite a site to see.
The event is hosted by the Ely Outdoor Enthusiasts. The event will begin on Saturday, March 17, at the County Park located on Aultman Street.
Onsite registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the event will start at 10 a.m. Kids are welcome and encouraged to participate as well. You can also pre-register by visiting their website at elyoutdoorenthusiasts.org
Each year, the event grows with more and more participants, ranging from 30-60 depending on the weather.
The groups mission is to encourage people to be healthy and lead an active lifestyle through fitness events while raising funds for the community and promoting tourism in White Pine County.
