White Pine Middle school wrestling coach Mark Dolezal reported on the 2018 Tah Neva Championship meet last weekend.

For the seventh grade team, he noted seventh grader Casetin Gubler (70-pounds), was 1-2 in the tournament and earned one point for the team.

Dolezal said, “This was one of the best weight classes in the tournament, every wrestler was very good. I think we will be seeing some of these kids win state championships when they reach high school. Casetin will most likely be in the same weight class next year and will be in the running for the championship.”

Quarterfinal – Colin Shishido (Churchill County) 2-2 won by major decision over Gubler (MD 9-0) Cons. Round 1 – Gubler won by decision over Lucas Scapini (Alder Creek) 0-2 (Dec 5-0) Cons. Semi – Eric Pineda (Yerington) 3-1 won by decision over Gubler (Dec 4-0)Seventh grader Brennan Allen (90 pounds) (2-2) placed 4th and scored 10.00 team points.“Brennan should know what he is made of in the consolation finals as he got slammed and hurt his shoulder.” Dolezal said. “He gutted it out and finished the match that went into overtime. Brennen has a great attitude and will only get better in the years to come.”

Quarterfinal – Allen won by fall over Cooper Eaton (Douglas) 0-2 (Fall 2:50)Semifinal – Jhett Harbor (Winnemucca) 2-1 won by fall over Allen (Fall 2:36)Cons. Semi – Allen won by major decision over George Rosenlund (Fernley) 1-2 (MD 13-2)3rd Place Match – Jairo Maldonado (Yerington) 3-1 won in sudden victory – 1 over Allen (SV-1 10-8)

Nafanna Vinson, 7th grade, 105-pounds, (0-2) place is unknown and scored no team points.“Nua is a first year wrestler that did a great job wrestling against the boys.  She is better than what she thinks she is and will be a great wrestler if she sticks with it,” said Dolezal.

Quarterfinal – Diego Villeda (Carson) 2-1 won by fall over Vinson (Fall 0:32)Cons. Round 1 – Vinson received a bye.

Cons. Semi – Kaden McKnight (Churchill County) 2-2 won by fall over Vinson (Fall 0:44)Tristan Gubler, (115 pounds),  (2-0) placed 1st and scored 18.00 team points.

Dolezal said, “Tristan had a great tournament on his way to winning the Tah Neva Championship. He is a very controlled wrestler that understands what it takes to win matches and is willing to do the work that is needed. He is going to be a big addition to the high school team in a couple of years.”

Quarterfinal – Gubler received a bye.

Semifinal – Gubler won by decision over Bronson Lyman (Fernley) 1-2 (Dec 6-1)

1st Place Match – Gubler won by decision over Isaiah Diaz (Churchill County) 2-1 (Dec 7-0)Morgan Finnicum, (145-pounds),  (1-0) placed 1st and scored 17.00 team points.“Morgan won an upper weight class as a sixth grader.” Dolezal said. “He did not get much chance to wrestle as a couple of wrestlers didn’t show up for the tournament. It’s hard to sit all day and then come out and perform well, but Morgan came out dominated the championship match.”

Semifinal – Finnicum received a bye.

1st Place Match – Finnicum won by major decision over Allyn Halterman (Fernley) 1-1 (MD 8-0)Donovan Perkins, (165 pounds) (0-2) place is unknown and scored 0.00 team points.“Donavan was able to wrestle in the tournament as the other league was missing a couple of kids,” Dolezal said.  “This was a great experience for him as a sixth grader. Next year we look for Donavan to be one of the top in his weight class.”

Quarterfinal – David Walker (Winnemucca) 3-0 won by fall over Perkins (Fall 0:22 ) Cons. Round 1 – Elvis Vonfransson (Douglas) 2-2 won by fall over Perkins (Fall 0:21)In the 8th grade tournament, Dolezal reported Braxton Brewer, (90-pounds) (1-1) placed 3rd and scored 9.00 team points.

“Braxton came close to making the finals as he had his opponent on his back.  He came back strong and placed third. This was a great way for Braxton to finish the season.  It has been a couple of years since he wrestled and he really started to show what he was capable of.”Semifinal – Anthony Guzman (Winnemucca) 1-1 won by tech fall over Brewer (TF-1.5 3:00 (20-4)

3rd Place Match – Brewer won by fall over Wesley Leloup (Battle Mountain) 0-2 (Fall 2:33)Nathanial Dolezal (160 pounds), (3-1) placed 3rd and scored 13.00 team points.

“Nathanial made a mistake that cost him his first match, but he came back strong and won his next three matches and took home the third place medal.  Nathanial had a breakout year and improved dramatically with a great attitude.”

Quarterfinal – Zach Gafford (Eagle Valley) 1-2 won by fall over Dolezal (Fall 1:33)

Cons. Round 1 – Dolezal won by decision over Eric Hickson (Carson) 0-2 (Dec 5-3)

Cons. Semi – Dolezal won by fall over Caleb Lewis (Douglas 8) 1-2 (Fall 1:55)

3rd Place Match – Dolezal won by fall over Brice Domagala (Battle Mountain) 1-2 (Fall 2:25)

Dolezal said the 7th grade team placed seventh out of 16 teams and the 8th grade team was 11th out of 15 teams. “This is the first time we have been in the Tah Neva tournament in three years. We are really pleased with the results. As we increase our numbers of wrestlers we will move up in the team rankings.

I would like to thank Joe Sedlacek and Jay Gubler for all the help with the middle school program. Without their help the wrestlers would not have the success they had.”
