Our loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, returned to her Heavenly Father after a valiant battle with breast cancer on April 15, 2018. She was surrounded by family in the home where she grew up in Sandy, Utah. She was a current resident of Ely, Nevada.
Tina was born September 10, 1968 in Salt Lake City to James and JoAnn Spens. She was the oldest of eight siblings. She graduated from Alta High School and attended the University of Utah where she graduated with a degree in math education. She later earned her master’s degree in math education from Western Governors University. Math was Tina’s passion; she was the regional mathematics coordinator for Northeastern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program. Tina helped many students and teachers achieve their educational goals.
Tina loved her family. She married Steven Baer November 3, 1989 (later divorced). She was blessed with three wonderful children, Lexie (Tyrel) Brown, Tayler Baer, and Jacob Baer. She married John J Westwood January 31, 2013. John cared deeply for Tina and took great care of her in her last years of life.
Tina loved music. She was an accomplished flautist and pianist. She enjoyed quilting, running, and spending time outdoors. Tina loved people and served everyone she knew. She had friends from all walks of life, every friend was considered a dear friend. Tina had a deep conviction for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She especially loved sharing her talents by playing the organ and teaching children of all ages.
Tina is survived by her loving husband, devoted children, parents, siblings Jenny (Erik) Kimball, Mike (Michelle) Spens, Andrea (Trevor) Lanham, Dan (Patricia) Spens, John (Katie) Spens, Tim (Yosha), and Patrick (Emily) Spens. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who loved spending time with “Aunt Tina”. She is also survived by her maternal grandmother Virginia Ehlert. She will be missed as well by her loyal pets Bailey and Mr. Fluffy Pants.
Tina’s ambition, courage, contagious smile, laughter and love will be dearly missed. We rely on our faith in our Savior Jesus Christ and the knowledge that we will be together again, to strengthen us as we bear her loss. Families are forever.
