The Nevada Northern Railway Foundation launched the Phoenix Dare because they recognized they needed considerable financial support to maintain this National Historic Landmark railroad.

The funds raised through the Dare, helps the foundation preserve the historic locomotives, rolling stock and buildings of the railroad.

The foundation is currently onto their third and biggest project, the return of the steam Locomotive 81 to operation. If you grew up here in Ely, you saw Locomotive 93 and 81 sitting by the White Pine Public Museum slowly rusting away.

They successfully got Locomotive 93 back in operation and with help they are going to be able to get Locomotive 81 back in operation.

Through the generosity of the First National Bank of Ely and other anonymous donors they have created the Phoenix Dare $100,000 challenge. As of December 24, they have reached $71,981 towards their goal of $100,000.

A Phoenix for mythology is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn.

Today they are almost to the halfway point in restoring Locomotive 81. Become a member or donate before the end of the year. Your contribution will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000 but only if you donate before December 31, 2018. Go to www.nnry.com or stop by the Ely Depot at 1100 Avenue A in Ely.
