Have you wondered why some people remain open to new experiences as they age, while others become more set in their ways? Overall, do you feel proud of your life or are you bitter about life’s disappointments? 

If you’re proud about what you’ve accomplished, it doesn’t mean you haven’t made mistakes. You feel fulfilled when you look back on the things you’ve done. 

Those who feel they haven’t accomplished many of the things they had hoped to do with their lives, may be depressed or angry. They might react more negatively to age related physical and emotional changes and have a more rigid mindset about aging.

If we understand the purpose and meaning of our lives, we’ll be more prepared for the inevitable challenges of growing older. 

We can adapt to the changes more easily. That’s why this kind of mature perspective can be one of the rewards of aging. Studies have found that seniors with positive attitudes toward aging experience less cognitive decline. Those positive feelings can even lead to a longer, healthier life.

It’s hard to maintain a positive attitude if you have medical problems, experience loneliness or suffer from depression. If physical or psychological problems are influencing the way you feel, talk to your doctor, a therapist, or someone you trust. As more people enter their senior years, more help is becoming available.
