Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program, a statewide leader in the provision of independent living services for senior citizens, is combining its strong background in volunteerism, caregiver and peer support with its success of the Respite Care program to propose the establishment of a new multi-community “Java Music Club Program”.

The project, Java Music for Rural Respite, would serve as an intervention to seniors, age 60 and older who are at risk for institutional placement and living with Alzheimer’s, Attention Deficit Disorder, Post Stroke, Dementia, Parkinson’s MS, cancer, COPD and other disorders. (and caregivers of those individuals.)

The program is the first standardized support intervention designed to address the critical rates of depression and loneliness of seniors. The program is research-based, successfully trialed and tested for effectiveness. JMC uses a unique combination of researched themes, photography, music, readings and a traditional talking stick to help participants honor each other’s contributions.

RSVP Respite volunteers will facilitate weekly activity groups in a neutral, safe setting, initially working with the care givers until the person they care for feels comfortable enough to be left with the staff. We plan to hold the programs for four hours weekly . It will give a caregiver time for errands, visiting friends, or just relaxing. We are hoping to begin the program the end of March or first of April. Please call the RSVP office (775) 289-6323 if you are interested in joining or have any questions.
