The Campeau’s make it a family event at last year’s Turkey Vulture 5k.

Special to The Ely Times

One would think the snow and cold temperatures this week would damper a 5k, but not the Ely Outdoor Enthusiasts.

The 5th Annual Turkey Vulture Stretch run/walk returns to Ely this Saturday.

The event will be held at the Veterans Memorial Park off of Aultman Street. Kids under 4 are free to participate. The course has changed and is now counter-clockwise.

Several locals who have already signed up look forward to the event and no weather elements are going to stop them.

The walk revolves around the arrival of the Turkey vultures back to Ely in March.

Some of the turkey vultures winter as far as Central and South America and return to Ely in the spring, and can be seen commonly in the Ely Cemetery.

The route takes runners past the cemetery where the vultures can be seen perched in the trees.

It’s quite a site to see the vultures fly around the surrounding area of the cemetery.

The Ely Outdoor Enthusiasts have been hosting this event for several years now. The event has grown to more than 70 participants.

Onsite registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the event will begin at 10 a.m.. You can also pre-register by visiting their website at elyoutdoorenthusiasts.org

The groups mission is to encourage people to lead a active and healthy lifestyle through fitness events while raising funds for the community and promoting tourism in White Pine County.
