One of the easiest things to take for granted in Ely is the sky.
For people who live in larger cities, seeing a truly dark night sky can require a long drive, careful planning, and a little luck. In White Pine County, it is simply part of life. Step outside on the right night and the stars stretch across the horizon in a way that reminds you just how far Ely is from the noise and glow of a major metro.
That is part of what makes September such a great month here.
The Great Basin Astronomy Festival returns September 10 through 12, bringing visitors, astronomers, families and curious first-timers to one of the best stargazing destinations in the country. Great Basin National Park has become nationally known for its dark skies, but for those of us who live nearby, the festival is also a reminder of how much of Elyās identity comes from the landscape around us.
The mountains, the open roads, the railroad, the high desert and the night sky all give Ely a character that is difficult to duplicate.
That character is especially visible when the community is busy.

September also brings events like Race the Rails, where cyclists test themselves against the Nevada Northern Railway, along with local clean-up efforts, train excursions and other activities that pull residents and visitors into town. On weekends like that, Ely feels a little fuller. Restaurants get busier, hotels welcome more travelers, local businesses see new faces and people who may have never visited before get a chance to understand why those of us who live here appreciate it.
For local businesses, those weekends matter.
At Greenlight Ely, we see visitors come through town who are heading toward Great Basin, traveling across Nevada or simply spending a weekend exploring. We also see the same local customers who stop in throughout the year. That mix is one of the things that makes operating a business in a community like Ely different from operating in a larger city.
You are not simply serving customers. You are part of the town they are experiencing.
That also means local businesses have a responsibility to contribute to the kind of community people want to return to. Supporting local events, keeping storefronts welcoming, helping visitors find their way around town and simply treating people well all play a role.
For Greenlight, there is also an added responsibility that comes with being part of Nevadaās legal cannabis industry.
Cannabis is legal for adults 21 and older in Nevada, but responsible use matters, especially in a place where so many people are traveling. Anyone using cannabis should understand where it is legal to possess and consume, should never drive impaired and should remember that federal land follows federal law.
That last point is particularly important during the Astronomy Festival. Great Basin National Park is federal property, which means cannabis remains prohibited there even though it is legal under Nevada law.
The distinction can be easy for visitors to miss.
A trip to Ely might include dinner downtown, a train ride, a visit to the park, a night under the stars and a stop at a local business. Each part of that experience comes with its own rules and responsibilities. Enjoying the area means respecting them.
In many ways, that sense of responsibility fits Ely.
This is a place where people still notice when a neighbor needs help, where volunteers show up for community events, and where local businesses depend on relationships as much as advertising. There is a certain accountability that comes with living and working in a smaller town.
You see people again. That is a good thing.
September is a great reminder of what Ely already has: a community with history, character and access to outdoor experiences people travel hundreds of miles to enjoy.
Sometimes it takes an event like the Great Basin Astronomy Festival to make us appreciate what is in our own backyard.
So this month, take a drive, ride the train, support a local business, attend a community event, or simply step outside after dark.
Then look up.
The view is one of Elyās best features, and it does not cost a thing.
