At halftime at West Wendover, the White Pine Ladycats soccer team found itself trailing the winless Wolverines 2-0. The Ladycats kept them winless, however, with three goals in the second half to pull off the comeback victory.
“At halftime we just talked about settling down and playing our game. We were down 2-0, but I felt like we were creating opportunities—we just weren’t finishing them,” said WPHS head coach Jose Martinez.
WPHS junior Jillian Bath had two of White Pine’s goals to tie the game, and freshman Taylinn Nicholson got her first ever varsity goal with five minutes remaining, and it ended up being a game-winner.
“In the second half, the girls came out with a lot more pressure, moved the ball quicker, and did a better job attacking the open space. Once we got that first goal, you could really see the confidence change,” Martinez said. “From there, they kept pushing and fighting for each other. I was extremely proud of the way they responded and found a way to come back and win.”
The Ladycats (5-5-1, 5-1-1) are second to undefeated Yerington in the Northern 2A. They are on the road for their next three games, playing two at Boulder City (4-1-2) on Friday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26. A trip to Elko (7-2-1) follows on Oct. 2 before White Pine gets back into league play with a home game against Battle Mountain (1-3-2) at 2 p.m. on Oct. 9.
